Bloomington-Normal jobless rate drops to 3.4%

Bloomington-Normal added 2,400 jobs over the last year and the jobless rate continues to fall.

Data from the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) show unemployment in the Twin Cities dipped to 3.4% in September. That’s down from 3.9% in September 2021.

The largest annual job gains were in education and health services (+500), government (+500), retail trade (+400), construction (+300), and leisure and hospitality (+300). IDES said no sectors saw job declines over the last year.

Bloomington-Normal shares the lowest joblesst rate in the state with the Quad Cities (that includes Moline and Rock Island, Ill.)

The statewide jobless rate is 4.4%. Rockford has the highest rate at 5.9%.

The unemployment rate decreased year-over-year in all 14 Illinois metropolitan areas in September and it decreased in all but 10 of Illinois' 102 counties, according to IDES.
