The Bloomington Fire Department said 18 people, including 13 children, were displaced by a duplex fire on Tuesday.

Bloomington fire crews say a duplex is unlivable after fire heavily damaged the home Tuesday afternoon.

Frank Friend, Bloomington Fire Department public information officer, said two families, including five adults and 13 children, were displaced by the fire at 1017 W. Monroe St.

Crews were called to the home shortly after 1 p.m. Friend said crews found heavy smoke and high heat in the basement, where the fire was contained. The first and second floors sustained smoke and water damage, according to Friend.

No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.

“This could have been a very different outcome if this were to happen in the middle of the night. Close your doors at night,” Friend said in a news release.

Friend said the American Red Cross was notified to provide relief to the displaced families.
