District 87 school board member Fitzgerald Samedy has pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated drunk driving and driving on a revoked license.

Samedy, 36, reached a plea agreement stemming from his May arrest during a traffic stop in Bloomington.

Court records show Samedy pleaded guilty to two felony charges. Four other counts, including aggravated drunk driving and obstruction of justice, were dropped during the Nov. 29 hearing.

According to prosecutors, Samedy refused a breathalyzer test when police stopped him in the 100 block of South Evergreen Lane on May 7. Police said they smelled alcohol on his breath and he displayed slurred speech ad glassy eyes.

Court records show Samedy has three previous DUI convictions, in 2009, 2016 and 2018.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 31. The aggravated DUI in Count 1 is a Class 2 felony with a range of three to seven years in prison, or probation with a minimum of 10 days jail or 480 hours of community service work. The driving while license revoked is a Class 4 felony with a range of one to six years in prison, or probation with a minimum of 30 days jail.

Samedy was elected to a four-year term to the school board in 2021. He has not responded to multiple requests for comment.

Despite the felony conviction, Samedy remains eligible to serve on the school board, according to Illinois State Board of Elections spokesperson Matt Dietrich.

“A felony would not disqualify a candidate from serving on the school board, however there is a prohibition on any child sex offender serving as a school trustee," Dietrich said.

Messages left with District 87 have not been returned. District 87 board president Mark Wylie responded late Thursday with a no comment.

"We are waiting for the process to take place," Wiley said.
