Two bike and pedestrian trail projects in McLean County have been awarded funding from a new state initiative.

The state of Illinois will give nearly $4 million to fund two hiking and biking trails in McLean County.

Gov. JB Pritzker has announced awards to 72 projects through the new Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP).

McLean County will get close to $2.7 million in grants to extend the Route 66 bike path from just outside Funks Grove to the village of McLean in southwest McLean County.

Heyworth is set to receive $1.2 million to build a 6,000-foot-long shared-use path along U.S. Route 136 from Centennial Park to east of U.S. Route 51 to connect the east and west sides of the village.

“We’re reversing a legacy of disinvestment that holds us all back, and we’re establishing a new day for the program,” Pritzker said in a statement.

ITEP is a mix of state and federal funding the state set aside for pedestrian and bike trails, streetscapes and other transportation concerns.

Illinois has awarded nearly $128 million to transportation projects throughout the state.
