Governor taps ISU alum, State Farm insurance agency owner as new trustee

State Farm
Darren Tillis

An Illinois State University finance alum and independent State Farm insurance agent has been chosen by Gov. JB Pritzker to fill a vacancy on the university's governing board.

Pending confirmation from the state senate, Chicago-based business owner Darren Tillis is slated to be the next member of ISU's board of trustees.

Tillis has spent nearly 30 years working in the finance and insurance sectors, according to a news release from the governor's office. He owns his own insurance agency in Chicago and has taken on various leadership roles in nonprofit groups around the city, including, most recently, as a board member of UCAN, a youth advocacy and development group.

He's also won two awards from the Chicago Westside Branch NAACP for community service and development work.

Tillis ran for Chicago alderman in 2015, but didn't win.

His appointment to the ISU board of trustees will bring the total number of members to seven — six trustees and one student trustee. There remains one vacancy to fill.

The next BOT meeting is slated for July 28.
