Connect Transit has temporarily suspended fares due to a maintenance issue with its fare boxes.

It's free to ride all Connect Transit buses in Bloomington-Normal, at least for now.

The public transit agency says it has been working to resolve a problem with its fare boxes since last week.

“We are currently running at zero-fare due to a maintenance issue with our fare boxes. We are working to resolve the issue with our vendor and are unsure on a timeline when fares will be reinstated,” marketing manager Aubrey Station said, noting fares were suspended on June 15.

Fixed route fares are typically $1.25 for adults. Connect Transit suspended fares during the first 15 months of the COVID-19 pandemic. It relied on federal COVID relief to cover its transportation costs.
