Heartland Community College plans to build a bike trail along Birky Pond with $200,000 it's getting from the state.

The state of Illinois has awarded Heartland Community College $200,000 to build a bike path.

Gov. JB Pritzker’s office has announced funding for 13 bike path projects throughout the state. The projects total close to $2.2 million. They are paid for through motor vehicle title fees.

The governor's office says the bike trail at Heartland's Birky Pond will offer the community a chance to view the wildlife the pond attracts and the native vegetation. Constitution Trail currently runs to Heartland along the Collegiate branch.

“Bicycle path projects are excellent drivers of job creation and economic development, while also increasing road safety for bicyclists,” Pritzker said in a statement. “Illinois’ beautiful natural landscape should be accessible and safe for all to enjoy, and I’m pleased that projects like this help make that goal a reality.”

The Illinois Bicycle Path Grant Program is administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). The program provides financial assistance to help local government acquire, build, and rehab non-motorized bicycle paths and related facilities, such as restrooms and drinking water, IDNR said in a news release.
