3 things to do this weekend: Handel holiday kick-off, Mackinaw murder mystery and a classic pair at Jazz UpFront

A concert hall is filled with a seated audience.

Here are 3 things to do for the weekend of Nov. 11-12, 2023, curated by WGLT's Lauren Warnecke. You can find more coverage on our Datebook - Arts & Music page or by subscribing to WGLT's Weekend Scoop email newsletter, which goes out every Friday.

A Medieval murder mystery: Mackinaw Valley Vineyards’ latest whodunnit dinner theater goes all-in on a Knights of the Round Table theme—turkey legs, wine flights and fudge cake, oh my! 5:30-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday; tickets $50 plus tax at 309-359-9463.

Jazz 101: Jazz UpFront gets back to basics this weekend with classic examples of central Illinois jazz and blues exemplars. Urbana trumpetist Nickolas Kaplan drives with his jazz quintet down I-74 and Springfield blues phenom Reggie Britton ventures up I-55 with his classic blues band, Black Magic Johnson. 8 p.m. Friday (Kaplan) and Saturday (Britton); $10 cover. Details at jazzupfront.com.

Too early for the holidays? Never! Kick off yours with the Illinois State University Civic Chorale performing Handel’s Messiah joined by special guests from MIOpera. Their updated oratorio, accompanied by a chamber ensemble, promises to shave 30 minutes off, getting you in, out and inspired in two hours or less. 3 p.m. Sunday at the ISU Center for Performing Arts; tickets $10 at the door or goredbirds.evenue.net.
