5 things to do this weekend: A extra helping of holiday fun

Holiday shoppers peruse a table of blown glass ornaments. A black banner on the bottom of the graphic reads 5 things to do this weekend in white text with a white WGLT logo

Here is a special edition of our weekly "3 things to do" segment, with a few more suggestions for Nov. 22-26, 2023, curated by WGLT's Lauren Warnecke. You can find more coverage on our Datebook - Arts & Music page or by subscribing to WGLT's Weekend Scoop email newsletter, which (ordinarily) goes out every Friday.

Sweets, treats and imperial stout: White Oak levels up, pairing its annual barrel-aged winter beer release with the brewery’s first-ever holiday market. Catch live glass blowing and t-shirt printing in real time while picking up a few something-somethings from Illinois vendors like Silver Stag Farms, Sugar Mama bakery, The Fox Glove Co. and more. Opens 1 p.m. Wednesday. whiteoak.beer.

Hot to turkey trot: Take a quick jog or stroll through Miller Park before settling into Turkey Day preparations. You’re guaranteed to see dogs dressed like turkeys—and some fully grown humans doing it, too. A kids half-mile walk starts at 9 a.m. near the pavilion. Starts for the 5K run and 1.5-mile walk tend to be a little loosey-goosey after that, so show up early and have a hot chocolate. 8 a.m. sign-up at Miller Park Pavilion; free. Non-perishable food items will be collected for Home Sweet Home Ministries. Bloomingtonparks.org.

A beer for your cranberry sauce: If you haven’t yet toured Destihl, now’s your chance. This weekend’s glimpse behind the beermaking curtain is themed around holiday leftover pairings, and you’ll walk out with a pint glass of your own. Friday and Saturday at Destihl Brewery and Beerhall. Tickets $15 at events.humantix.com.

Last call for a local legend: Multihyphenate Marc Boon, formerly of Hip Pocket, plays his last show with The Day Drinkers. They’ll imbibe on favorite covers—most of those from the blues and classic American rock bands like the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. 8 p.m. Friday (doors at 7 p.m. Tickets $15 at thecastletheatre.com.

Throwback flicks at a throwback drive-in: The region’s last remaining operational drive-in gets decked out as a winter wonderland, complete with photo ops with Mr. and Mrs. Clause and the Grinch. Stick around for seasonal snacks and your choice of “Elf” or “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” on the big screen. 6:30 p.m. showtimes Friday and Saturday at Harvest Moon Drive-In, Gibson City. Tickets $9 (reserved parking spaces for $10) at harvestmoondrivein.com.
