3 things to do this weekend: Pancake Days, Space Girl, Polar Plunge

A pink haired clown talks into a microphone surrounded by a crowd of engaged onlookers. A black banner across the bottom reads "3 Things to do this weekend" with WGLT's logo in white block text.

Here are 3 things to do for the weekend of Feb. 23-25, 2023, curated by WGLT's Lauren Warnecke. You can find more coverage on our Datebook - Arts & Music page or by subscribing to WGLT's Weekend Scoop email newsletter, which goes out every Friday.

A weird space play: ISU graduate student John McCall directs Mora V. Harris’ heartwarming play about a teenaged lesbian alien named Arugula—like the lettuce—who tries to fit in on Planet Earth. It’s about aliens, sure, but is a decidedly human story about friendship, acceptance, roller derby and laughing it off. 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at ISU’s Westhoff Theatre; tickets $12 at 309-438-2535 and online.

Pancake Days! Kiwanis’ annual flapjack fundraiser is back to full force, with the first two-day pancake-a-polooza since the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s not just good vibes and buttermilk beauties—Pancake Days is Kiwanis’ biggest event supporting scholarships for kids to attend Camp Limberlost. 7:30 a.m. – noon Saturday and Sunday at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts; tickets $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Kids 11 and under eat free.

A semi-polar plunge: Thanks to El Niño, there’s no better year to jump into Miller Park Lake in support of the Special Olympics. Temps are expected to hit 50 for Bloomington’s Polar Plunge, but lest you worry it won't be hard core enough, water temperatures are still near freezing. Warm up with a cold brew at Lil’ Beaver Brewery for the Post Plunge Party. Registration at 9 a.m. Saturday (waves at 10:30 a.m. and noon); participants can register online to create a fundraising campaign.
