In McLean County, there were few contested races on the primary ballot, particularly for Democratic voters.

Fewer than 1 in 5 registered voters in McLean County cast a ballot in the primary election.

Voter turnout fell to just 17% in McLean County, according to preliminary vote totals from the county clerk’s office and the Bloomington Election Commission. Less than 19,000 ballots were cast countywide Tuesday at polling places and previously by early voters and through vote-by-mail.

That’s far less than in other recent presidential primary years:

One explanation: In McLean County there were few contested races on the primary ballot, particularly for Democratic voters.

There also are questions about voter enthusiasm for the presidential candidates at the top of the ticket for both major parties — and many voters simply didn’t vote for either of them.

In McLean County, Republicans cast nearly 12,400 ballots — but only 73% voted for Donald Trump, the only candidate still in the race. Democrats cast over 6,500 ballots, with 89% voting for Joe Biden.
