In a move to embrace the evolution of performing arts education, Illinois State University has rebranded its School of Theatre and Dance to reflect growing interest in cinematic arts.
Ann Haugo, director of the newly renamed School of Theatre, Dance, and Film, expressed enthusiasm for the transformative potential of the program.
"Once the [film] enrollment grew as fast as it has, then it became imperative that it be reflected in the name of the school as well," said Haugo. "We have built the foundation for the film curriculum and are continuing to add faculty for those courses."
By integrating film studies, the university aims to create an environment that fosters creativity, innovation and collaboration.
"We co-sponsor Foxtail Film Festival [and] have a number of alumni who are successful in film that we are exploring partnerships with," Haugo said.
The name change comes at a time of growing initiatives within of the School of Theatre, Dance, and Film, including finding the space to create.
"We are creating internships and there is also a new sound stage in Rantoul that we are in contact with,” said Haugo.
A nearly $70 million investment in infrastructure for ISU's fine arts facilities has been years in the making, and is expected to break ground in 2025.
"We have one project over the summer to convert a lab space dedicated for our film majors," Haugo said, "and of course the new building replacing Centennial West will have a studio in there that is fully green screen capable."
Combined with a growing School of Creative Technologies, Haugo said the addition of film as a component within the school aligns with the institution's broader vision of preparing students for success in an increasingly multifaceted entertainment industry.
"The film and digital media major enrollment make up one third of the student body," Haugo said, with a total of about 35 students studying film.
But the program and name change launched quietly, with little fanfare. Haugo said they're waiting to solidify a collaboration with the School of Creative Technologies before rolling out the red carpet.
