Connect Transit will keep its cooling station up and running through Saturday in the McLean County Health Department parking lot due to the expected extreme heat.

The cooling station near Front Street in downtown Bloomington will be available to anyone needing relief from the heat from Thursday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Bloomington-Normal has recorded several consecutive days of extreme heat, a prolonged period of heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees. In the last week there have been four days with temperatures ranging between 84 and 94 degrees.

The Ready Illinois website says the extreme heat can be hazardous for children, seniors, those with special needs and pets. High temperatures can cause heat-related illnesses such as cramps, exhaustion, and stroke. Individuals are advised to stay out of the sun, wear lightweight clothing, avoid alcohol, and to keep rooms well ventilated with air conditioning.

You can find other cooling stations in Bloomington-Normal on the McLean County GIS website.
