Fire caused substantial damage to a home in Normal Saturday afternoon, according to the Normal Fire Department.
The department said no injuries were reported to the resident, or to firefighters in the fire in the 300 block of Highland Avenue, but a cat died of smoke inhalation. The occupant’s three dogs also escaped safely.
Fire crews were called to the home at 12:36 p.m. for report of a fire in the kitchen. The fire quickly spread up the walls, according to police.
Crews had the fire under control in about 25 minutes, said NFD. There was heavy fire damage to the kitchen and a room above, and substantial smoke damage throughout the home.
Normal Fire Department spokesperson Matt Swaney said later Saturday the house is unlivable until a damage assessment. The insurance company is providing temporary living arrangements, according to Swaney.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
