The Ecology Action Center (EAC) in Normal has announced a household hazardous waste collection event for Sept. 28 at the Interstate Center in Bloomington.

The free event, funded by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, is intended to provide a convenient and safe way for residents to dispose of hazardous materials.

“The increased frequency of hazardous waste collection events will help increase participation and reduce the likelihood of improper disposal while conserving local financial resources for taxpayers,” said Michael Brown, EAC executive director.

The event will be appointment-only to regulate traffic and prevent long waits. Residents must sign up for an appointment at HHWmclean.org or call 309-GOTO-HHW (309-68-6449) for assistance. Registration is open to all Illinois resident at no cost.

Only residential waste is accepted at the event, and business or commercially generated waste is not allowed.

The deadline for appointments is noon Sept. 20.

Residents can dispose of a variety of hazardous materials, which include oil-based paints, used motor oil, herbicides, pesticides, old gasoline, pool chemicals, cleaning products, mercury, acids, non-alkaline batteries, lithium batteries, paint thinners, lawn chemicals, solvents, antifreeze, hobby chemicals, aerosol paints and pesticides, fluorescent lamp bulbs, drain cleaners, and corrosives.

Unaccepted items include latex paint, agricultural wastes, business/commercial sector wastes, explosives, fireworks, controlled substances, unwanted or expired medication, lead acid and alkaline batteries, propane tanks, smoke detectors, farm machinery oil, fire extinguishers, biohazard waste, and institutional or business waste.

Volunteers are needed to help with traffic control at the event; registration is available online at HHWmclean.org.
