The David Hyatt Van Dolah House, often referred to as "The Castle," goes up for auction on Aug. 9.

A historic home in Lexington will be sold by auction after sitting on the market for nearly a year.

The 1898 Victorian mansion at 10 N. Spencer St., known as "The Castle," was originally built for David Hyatt Van Dolah, an aristocrat best known as a broker of French horses.

Bloomington architect George H. Miller and his partner James E. Fisher designed the five-bedroom, five-bath Queen Anne-style house. The estate was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices first listed the 42-acre estate for sale in September 2023 with an asking price of $4.5 million. On May 1, the price dropped to $4 million.

Luxury auctioneer Concierge Auction announced Thursday an online auction is set to open on Aug. 9. Opening bids are expected between $500,000 and $1 million, with final bids requested by Aug. 23.

The property, located just off Route 66 outside downtown Lexington, is zoned for residential and commercial use, and recently was used as an an event and photography venue. The grounds include an in-ground pool, tennis court, two-mile miniature train and restored carousel.
