Unemployment in Bloomington-Normal rose to 5.3% last month, more than a full point higher than it was in May [4.2%].
Data from the Illinois Department of Employment Security [IDES] show statewide unemployment in June increased to 6.1%.
The Bloomington-Normal labor market, which includes McLean and DeWitt counties, added 900 jobs over the last year.
Manufacturing [+600] and Leisure and Hospitality +500] saw the biggest job gains, followed by Government [+200], Mining-Construction [+200], and Private Education-Health Services [+100].
Professional and Business Services [-400] lost the most jobs, along with Financial Activities [-200] and Retail Trade [-100], according to IDES.
Total nonfarm jobs increased in five metro areas over the last year, decreased in six markets, and was relatively unchanged in three others.
The Twin Cities’ June jobless rate topped 5% for the first time since last August.
The Quad Cities market that includes Moline and Rock Island posted the lowest unemployment among Illinois’ 14 metro areas at 5%. The highest unemployment is in Danville at 7.5%.
