Seven people were displaced following an apartment fire in Bloomington on Wednesday morning.

According to a news release from the Bloomington Fire Department, fire crews were called to the third-floor apartment on Willedrob Drive near Four Seasons Road in southeast Bloomington shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Fire department captain Frank Friend said the fire started in the kitchen resulted from unattended cooking. The fire was quickly extinguished.

No one was injured. A dog was rescued from the apartment.

The fire department said the apartment’s contents sustained smoke, fire and water damage, and two apartments on the second floor incurred water and smoke damage.

Friend said many of the tenants did not have renters insurance.

He noted unattended cooking is the leading cause of residential fires.

“We encourage people to have a fire extinguisher and purchase renters’ insurance. Fire doubles in temperature every 18 seconds,” Friend said.
