Here are 3 things to do for the weekend of Aug. 9-11, 2024, curated by WGLT's Lauren Warnecke. You can find more coverage on our Datebook - Arts & Music page or by subscribing to WGLT's Weekend Scoop email newsletter, which goes out every Friday.
Learn about life under the big top: Author and circus historian Maureen Brunsdale shares images and stories about Antoinette Concello, the first woman to perform a triple somersault on trapeze and, perhaps equally difficult, wife to Bloomington native, fellow flyer and Ringling Bros. impresario Art Concello. 2 p.m. Saturday online and at the McLean County Museum of History; free. Details at 309-827-0428 and mchistory.org.
Make art en plein air: Inside Out Accessible Art hosts an interactive, family-friendly festival with hands-on, nature-inspired art projects, plus face painting, henna tattoos and hula hooping. 12 p.m. Sunday at Miller Park Pavilion; free. insideoutartcoop.org.
From Truth or Consequences to Normal: Illinois Art Station is third on a more than 50-city tour for experimental music’s preeminent troubadour Tatsuya Nakatani. The Osaka-born avant-garde percussionist makes his home base in the desert town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, where he hones a mesmerizing sound—sometimes harrowing, sometimes resplendent—combining gongs, prepared drums and bowed cymbals. The set includes a trio with Stefen Robinson and Jon Byler Dann of Nonlinear Field. 7 p.m. Sunday at Illinois Art Station; $10 donation. Details on Facebook.
