Here are 3 things to do for the weekend of Sept. 27-29, 2024, curated by WGLT's Lauren Warnecke. You can find more coverage on our Datebook - Arts & Music page or by subscribing to WGLT's Weekend Scoop email newsletter, which goes out every Friday.
Party like it's 1999: Illinois State’s homecoming festivities aren’t just for the co-eds. Community members of all ages can join in and celebrate the Red Birds with a 5K run and parade on Saturday morning—and the football, obviously. Kick off is 2 p.m. against North Dakota State. Visit homecoming.illinoisstate.edu for a full schedule of events throughout the weekend.
Feed an alpaca: A Heyworth farm opens its doors for a meet and greet with award-winning alpacas, plus spinning and felting demos and plenty of cuddly wares for purchase. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday at Houchin Family Alpacas, 16708 E400 North Rd.; Heyworth; free. houchinfamilyalpacas.com.
Hear new music: Alternative indie duo Shovels & Rope rarely, if ever, miss, and their newest album (the first since Manticore in 2022) is just the latest example of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst’s brilliance. Something is Working Up Above My Head hits a little like the National, a little like Band of Horses, a little like Arcade Fire. But not quite. 8 p.m. Sunday at the Castle Theatre (doors at 7 p.m.); tickets $28 at thecastletheatre.com.
