Employees at the Starbucks store at 307 S. Veterans Parkway in Normal have filed a petition to join a union that supports baristas at more than 500 locations nationwide.

The Starbucks store at the Shoppes at College Hills in Normal has formally voted to unionize.

A spokesperson for the organizing effort says the baristas voted 17-0 to support the effort to join the union.

According to Starbucks Workers United, baristas are looking to unionize, partly to give input into discipline, terminations and other issues involving worker rights.

“With collective bargaining, we gain a real voice to address the issues we face at Starbucks,” according to the union’s website.

A Starbucks spokesperson said after the Normal location submitted its petition to unionize that the company is “committed to delivering on our promise to offer a bridge to a better future to all Starbucks partners.”

The location is Normal is one of more than 520 Starbucks stores that have joined the workers union and 28 in Illinois.
