Volunteer bellringers helped the Salvation Army of Bloomington top the goal for its largest fundraising campaign of the year by more than $20,000.
The Salvation Army has announced its red kettle campaign raised $692,249, surpassing its target of $670,000.

“We are so grateful for the generous support of those who gave their time, talents, and financial support to the annual Red Kettle Campaign,” said Major Daniel Leisher, corps officer for the Salvation Army in McLean County. “At a time when the needs of our neighbors have never been greater, critical funding to support them through food pantries, warming shelters, and emergency rent and utility assistance is vital to ensuring we continue.”
The charity uses the money to supports its services year-round, including housing, shelter and rent and utility assistance.
Coins and cash dropped in the red kettles make up only a portion of the money the campaign raised. The Salvation Army says $554,181 came in through online and mail donations, while $138,068 was collected in the red kettles.
The Salvation Army says it annually serves more than 14,000 people in Bloomington-Normal.
The Salvation Army honored its top bell ringing group, the Bloomington Fire Department, which raised $4,786.09. The Scott Laughlin Spirit of Bell Ringing trophy, named for the late former Bloomington radio host, went to Uke-aholics, while Safe Harbor volunteer Vicki Berg received the David Penn Memorial Volunteer of the Year.
