The McLean County treasurer’s office plans to mail corrected tax bills next week to property owners in two school districts where tax rates were incorrectly calculated.
Property tax rates, which are calculated by the McLean County clerk’s office, were incorrect in the first installment of bills that were sent to property owners in the Stanford-based Olympia school district in western McLean County and the Colfax-based Ridgeview school district in northeastern McLean County.
In both cases, lower tax rates were calculated, leaving the school districts to brace for an unexpected drop in revenue.
Administrators in both school districts notified the public of the error and said they were working with the county for a correction.
Olympia Superintendent Laura O’Donnell said previously the county had initially resisted the idea of sending out a corrected bill and wanted instead to recoup the difference on next year’s tax bills. She said that would have left the school system short on cash they were relying on for the current year.
“The district is extremely appreciative that the county is working to remedy this situation,” O’Donnell said via email.
County treasurer Rebecca McNeil said the county plans to mail corrected bills next week and that additional balance will be due with the second installment on Sept. 4.
For property owners in the Olympia school district, it only affects those in McLean County. The district spans parts of five counties.
The first installment remains due on Wednesday [June 4].
