G.E. Road in Bloomington is getting resurfaced this summer from Veterans Parkway to Towanda Barnes Road, and construction has already begun.

Construction crews have been milling the surface of the G.E. Road to level it. Once the road is leveled, asphalt gets poured on top to create a smooth surface.

City of Bloomington engineering director Jim Karch said the rideability of G.E. Road was poor.

“Being that it's over 30 years old, we were starting to see the joint failures that caused more of a traditional ka-thump ka-thump that caused a lot of consternation for citizens,” Karch said.

During construction, the City of Bloomington is working to minimize disruptions on the road by phasing where the work takes place.

Karch said construction crews have started on the outside of the road and are working their way inward, leaving lanes open for flowing traffic.

“But in reality, construction is always disruptive,” Karch said.

The project in its entirety is predicted to finish by Aug. 1, according to Karch.

The road is owned by the City of Bloomington, not the Illinois Department of Transportation, with the repairs adding up to $2.5 million.

Once completed, Karch said this road will be a great improvement for the citizens.

If residents are interested in learning more about construction projects in Bloomington, Karch encourages them to check out the city's Infrastructure Projects Dashboard.
