Unit 5 families and employees are mourning the death of an eighth-grade teacher just as the new school year begins.
Shawn J. Anderson, 57, of Normal, died in a bicycle crash at Comlara Park in Hudson this week. Authorities are investigating how it happened.
Anderson taught in Unit 5 schools since 2000. He first taught at Chiddix Junior High before moving to Kingsley Junior High in 2004. A statement from Unit 5 described him as a "beloved" educator.
Unit 5 says social workers and psychologists are available to students and staff members in need. Unit 5 also has an Employee Assistance Program to support staff.
Unit 5's first day of school is Thursday, Aug. 21.
