The City of Bloomington has named an interim director of Miller Park Zoo, following the recent departure of Jay Pratte, who had managed the facility since 2022.
City officials have not shared any details about Pratte’s departure, saying it is a personnel matter.
The city’s Parks and Recreation department announced Friday that it recently named Norah Fletchall as interim zoo director.
“I look forward to working with the staff to provide the support during this transition and ensure the Miller Park Zoo continues to be a place for guests of all ages to connect to wildlife and wild places," said Fletchall said in a statement.
Fletchall has 40 years experience working in zoos, according to the city. She has served in administrative roles at zoos in Indianapolis, Buffalo, and Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has been a project manager with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
“This transition allows us to maintain stability, support our staff, and continue providing the high-quality services our community expects,” said Eric Veal, Parks and Recreation director. “We look forward to selecting a long-term leader who will help guide the zoo into its next chapter.”
Fletchall’s appointment comes as the zoo works on a master plan the city sought earlier this year that may include an expansion of the 66.7-acre park on the city's west side.
