In a statement, Town of Normal Human Relations Commission member Janessa Williams said the event has recognized local leaders, youth and organizations "that embody Dr. King’s vision of justice, service and unity" for five decades.

The luncheon is the oldest event in Illinois dedicated to honoring the legacy of Dr. King.

Awards will be presented during the luncheon from 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Brown Ballroom in Illinois State University’s Bone Student Center.

The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., president and chief executive officer of the Hip Hop Caucus. Yearwood is known for his work in social justice, climate action and civic engagement.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are available for $30 online through Jan. 10 at mlkawards.com.
