Connect Transit transfer center designs pass the halfway mark

With a groundbreaking date still yet to come, Connect Transit is over halfway done with design plans for the new transfer center in downtown Bloomington.

City Manager Jeff Jurgens announced the design is 60% complete for the site of the former Market Street parking garage.

The project has $28 million secured for the facility expected to fill 5,000 square feet. In December, the project secured $5 million in a federal grant.

“Over 1,500 people transfer in our downtown every weekday, currently off a crowded and busy street, and this new facility will revolutionize the transit experience,” he said.

Jurgens said the project will bring 90 public parking spaces back to the lot after the closure of the garage last year. He said the state-of-the-art facility will also include space for an additional downtown police office to boost public safety and connectivity.

“This initiative has been in the works for years and it is great to see the progress being made,” said Jurgens.

Connect Transit has planned the facility's groundbreaking to be at the end of 2026 or early 2027.
