A state grant will support student safety at Tri-Valley schools.

A state grant aims to make it safer for children to get to school in Downs.

The Tri-Valley school district southeast of Bloomington-Normal will see sidewalk improvements, and upgrades to traffic control devices and pedestrian crossings around Tri-Valley Elementary, Middle and High School.

The Village of Downs will get $239,000 through the state of Illinois’ Safe Routes to School program. It’s providing $12 million to school districts across the state to make walking and biking to school safer.

“The Safe Routes to School program is transforming neighborhoods into safer, more walkable places for kids and families,” Gov. JB Pritzker said in a statement. “With this investment, 68 communities statewide will build projects that give our students a protected, reliable way to walk or bike to school.”
