McLean County property owners in rural Hudson got a surprise on their 2026 tax bills.
Parcels within Hudson Township were charged a Village of Hudson tax, despite not being within village limits. That includes businesses and residences surrounding Lake Bloomington and rural areas north of Bloomington-Normal.
McLean County Clerk Kathy Michael, whose office is responsible for computation of tax bill rates and tax district codes appearing on bills, said those affected should expect notification by mail soon. In an email to WGLT, Michael said the mistake is likely a clerical error impacting a single line item.
But several property tax bills attached to parcels within the Village of Hudson suggest the village’s taxes may also have been miscalculated.
WGLT reviewed residential property tax bills in Hudson showing their village taxes cut approximately in half compared to last year. Conversely, the Green Gables restaurant near Lake Bloomington was charged nearly $250 in Hudson village taxes. It was $0 the year before.
It’s the second year in a row that McLean County tax bills have gone out with an incorrect charge. In 2025, taxes miscalculated for parcels in the Olympia and Ridgeview school districts cost the county over $50,000 in extra postage to correct.
Michael said she is working with the McLean County Treasurer's office and the vendor Tax Extension to assess what happened.
In an email, McLean County Treasurer Rebecca McNeil said after the County Clerk identifies and takes corrective action on the computation of tax rates, her office will communicate with affected taxpayers.
"Any overpayment will most certainly be refunded," McNeil said.
