The closest permanent household hazardous waste disposal sites are in Saint Louis and Naperville. McLean County has sought its own permanent disposal site and hosts periodic pop-ups.

As McLean County inches along in its pursuit of a permanent location to dispose of hazardous materials, a temporary solution is in place next month.

The Normal nonprofit Ecology Action Center [EAC] will hold a McLean County household hazardous waste collection event for Saturday, Aug. 22, providing safe disposal of items that are combustible, flammable, corrosive or toxic.

EAC Executive Director Michael Brown said holding frequent local household hazardous waste events can increase participation and reduce the likelihood of improper disposal — which can impact drinking water supplies.

Free to users, Illinois residents can register by appointment only via HHWmclean.org or by phone at 309-468-6449. The deadline to register is Aug. 18 at noon.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is covering the bulk of the costs, with additional support from the City of Bloomington, Town of Normal, McLean County and the Bloomington-Normal Water Reclamation District.

The disposal only accepts residential wastes. No business or commercially generated wastes are accepted.

Volunteers are needed to help with traffic control at the event. Find the list of materials accepted for disposal and volunteer signup registration on the HWW website.
