The McLean County Sheriff's Office is celebrating the retirement of a celebrated four-legged officer. Shadow, from the county's K-9 unit, retired last week after more than eight years with the department.
Sheriff Matt Lane gave a 10-42 over the radio last week, a formal send-off marking the end of an officer's tour of duty. He noted an esteemed career that included over 700 deployments. Among Shadow's accomplishments is helping to recover more than 100 pounds of illicit substances.
Lane added that Shadow was a part of numerous arrests and apprehensions and assists with state and federal agencies.
"Shadow, you've been a great companion and partner," Lane said. "You'll always be a part of the law enforcement community. Enjoy your retirement. You earned it."
Shadow is a Belgian Malinois originally from the Netherlands, partnered with Deputy Josh Albee. The breed typically lives between 12 and 14 years.
The department has two other canine units. Deputy Noah Sandlers is partnered with a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix named Kano, and Deputy Carson Hoffman is partnered with a Dutch Shepard named Casey.
According to a social media post, Shadow will live out his retirement with Albee.
"Now go get all the pets, play all the games and take all the naps your heart desires!" the post said.
