Orchard Road Murder Suspect Makes First Court Appearance

Hammet Brown
Bloomington Police Department

The Bloomington man accused of fatally shooting two people and injuring two others made a brief appearance Wednesday in a McLean County courtroom.

Hammet Brown, 26, appeared via videoconference from the McLean County jail, where he's being held on $3 million bond. He faces eight counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Authorities say he shot and killed Taneshiea C. Brown, 20, and Steven C. Alexander, 18, and injured Kenleia Sims and Tyree Jones in the early morning hours of June 10. The shooting happened at 1221 Orchard Road in Bloomington during a large gathering, next door to Brown’s residence.

Authorities won't discuss what led to the violence. No new details about the shootings were revealed in court Wednesday.

Brown was arrested Tuesday morning on Chicago's south side. Police had been looking for him since June 14, when a warrant was issued for his arrest.

A public defender was appointed for Brown. He's due back in court for arraignment on July 6.
