The Illinois Department of Transportation is warning drivers that trips on Interstate 55 between Bloomington-Normal and Chicago will take a bit longer for the next several weeks.
IDOT says several construction projects will require lane closures. IDOT is expecting backups and delays during heavier travel periods, especially Fridays and Sundays.
Construction will slow traffic in several locations:
- Resurfacing between mile markers 195 and 205 (around the Pontiac exits). Recommended alternative route of Illinois 116 in Pontiac, Illinois 23, Old U.S. 66 and County Highway 1 in Odell.
- Bridge repair near mile markers 189 (just north of the Chenoa exit) and 221 near Dwight.
- Intermittent patching repairs between mile markers 209 to 233 (between the Pontiac area north to Braidwood and Coal City).
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
