Republican McLean County Board member Josh Barnett is ending his bid for the Bloomington City Council.

As the filing period begins for next spring's city council elections, one candidate says he won't be on the ballot.

McLean County Board member Josh Barnett said in a statement Monday that he's suspending his campaign for Bloomington City Council. He said he wants to spend time "on my family, my career, and serving the constituents of District 10 on the McLean County Board."

Barnett, a Republican, said last summer he planned to run in Ward 8—and he was one of the first candidates to announce. Current Ward 8 Alderman Diana Hauman is not seeking re-election.

"I plan to continue my public service on the McLean County Board during this exciting time. I look forward to helping bring together our newly elected members with those currently serving to move our community forward," Barnett said. "I will continue to be a strong advocate for transparency, behavioral health initiatives, rural infrastructure, and efficient, well-run county government. I look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of McLean County for many years to come."

Barnett's exit leaves Jeff Crabill as the only announced candidate in Ward 8. That ward includes neighborhoods along Mercer Avenue, Eastland Mall, State Farm headquarters, and the Grove subdivision.

The filing period ends Nov. 26. The election is April 2, 2019.
