I-55 Near Towanda To Be Named For Fallen Soldier

Sgt. Anthony Maddox
State Rep. Dan Brady

Illinois lawmakers are honoring a fallen soldier by naming a stretch of Interstate 55 through Towanda in his honor.

Former Normal Community High School student Anthony Maddox was killed in July 2013 in a fueling accident in Andar, Afghanistan. The U.S. Army sergeant was 22.

Anthony had also attended Chiddix Junior High before he moved to Texas, where he graduated from Nederland High School.

The Illinois House and Senate have approved a joint resolution to designate I-55 as it travels through Towanda as the Sergeant Anthony R. Maddox Memorial Highway.

“It’s a tragedy that his life was cut short, but he will long be honored and remembered here in the community where he grew up,” said state Rep. Dan Brady of Normal.

The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to erect signs along the interstate in Maddox’s honor.
