A Normal Police officer pleaded not guilty Friday to official misconduct and theft charges, during his first public court appearance since being accused of stealing—and then trying to return—$12,000 in cash.
Brian Williams, 46, is on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. Williams, an 18-year veteran of NPD, allegedly stole the cash Nov. 25 from the residence of someone who apparently overdosed. Williams had responded to the residence for the 911 call. Days later Williams allegedly tried to secretly return the money to the person's relative.
Williams appeared Friday in front of Judge Bill Yoder alongside defense attorney Stephanie Wong. Wong declined comment after the arraignment, saying she had yet to review discovery in the case.
Normal Police Chief Rick Bleichner said the internal investigation remains ongoing. Illinois State Police is leading the criminal investigation.
Williams is due back in court Jan. 27.
