Six candidates will compete for three seats on the Unit 5 school board in April.

Two candidates have withdrawn their candidacies for Unit 5 school board, following a challenge to their petitions.According to the McLean County Clerk’s Office, Elise Albers and Mollie Emery both dropped out of the race, leaving six candidates to vie for three open seats in the spring.

Thursday was the deadline for candidates to withdraw from the April 6 school board elections in Illinois.

According to the clerk’s office, Roberto Garcia of Bloomington challenged their petitions, but the candidates withdrew before a hearing was held.

The clerk's office said the two candidates did not give a reason for why they were withdrawing.

Albers and Emery were among eight candidates in the race for three school board seats.

The three seats will go to the top vote getters, except no more than one candidate can be elected from among candidates Janelle Czapar, Gavin Cunningham and Ericka Ralston as school boards limit the number of seats in each congressional township. Kentrica Coleman, Jeremy DeHaai and Stan Gozur are also seeking the election to the board.

All of them would be newcomers to the board.

Candidates have until Feb. 4 to declare a write-in candidacy.
