For the first time, the Bloomington Criterium will allow open alcohol for spectators enjoying the series of bicycle races downtown Saturday, August 27.
"People will get a wristband when they go into our licensed establishments along the race route. It's beer and wine only in plastic cups, and they can come on out and stand on the sidewalk and cheer for their favorite riders," said alderman Karen Schmidt during Sound Ideas. Schmidt's ward encompasses the downtown race course.
Race director Brandon Beehner said another bevy of competitive racers are headed to Bloomington.
"We are expecting people from across the country and international racers as well," he said.
The city of Bloomington is on board as a sponsor for this year's event. Schmidt said the sponsorship reflect's the city's willingness to help events in Bloomington.
"Downtown is such a wonderful venue and there are so many great businesses. This is a way to showcase that," said Schmidt.
This year, a new segment is being added. On Friday, sprint races will occur in Miller Park. While downtown races occur all day Saturday, the pro-category races begin at 5 PM.
Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, tear down course marshal and the kids corner. You can sign-up here.
