Creative Commons

Independence Day got off to a bloody start in Peoria this year, with one person killed in a shooting and several others injured in multiple acts of violence.

Just after midnight, officers responded to the 1100 block of E. Frye on a report of a large fight. A man reportedly run over by a car was lying unresponsive in the street. Emergency responders revived him, and he was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, Peoria Police Public Information Officer Amy Dotson said.

Three women also suffered serious but non-life threatening stab wounds in the fight, Dotson said. They were all taken to the hospital.

Around 1:15 a.m., Peoria police officers responded to the Taft Homes, 600 NE Adams on reports of large fights and shots fired. Police broke up the crowds and made two arrests. A weapon was also found. No injuries were reported.

Just before 2 a.m., police responded to the 2700 block of W. Montana on a stabbing report. A man was found with a stab wound to the neck and transported to the hospital in critical condition. A woman was arrested in connection with the stabbing, Dotson said.

Around 2:15 a.m., Peoria police officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 2200 block of W. Wiswall in Peoria's South Side. Two men were found in a house with gunshot wounds. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Robert Purdle, 30, of Peoria was pronounced dead at 3:15 a.m. after he was shot multiple times. Harwood said he didn't find evidence of close range or defensive wounds.

The second victim suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries.

Officers responded to the 2800 block of W. Ann around 4:45 a.m. on multiple ShotSpotter reports. A man was found shot inside an apartment. He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, Dotson said.
