Six more people have tested positive for COVID-19, the McLean County Health Department reported Sunday.

The new cases bring McLean County's total confirmed cases up to 121. There are four people hospitalized and 26 isolating at home. The 30 active cases is the most here since April 13. As recently as April 30, there were only eight active cases in McLean County.

Two of the newest patients are hospitalized, including one in intensive care. Of the six new cases:

  • Two males: One in his 20s, another in his 60s.
  • Four females: One in her 60s, two in their 70s, and one in her 80s.

People in their 20s now represent the highest number of confirmed cases in McLean County, with 25 of the 121 cases (21%).

African Americans still make up about one-third of all cases, despite only comprising 8% of McLean County's population.

Why More Cases?

There are a few possible reasons for the uptick in cases since April 30. One is that more people are being tested locally.

Around 813 people were tested between May 2 and May 8 at Bloomington's drive-up site at the Interstate Center, according to data released by the McLean County Emergency Management Agency. That was the highest weekly total since the site opened on March 28.

Testing numbers increased starting April 29 when the site's criteria changed to allow more asymptomatic "critical infrastructure" workers, including grocery and restaurant employees. The testing site is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Another factor: Seven ISU students recently contracted COVID-19, apparently related to a gathering at a private residence in late April or early May.
