The city of Peoria is looking to people financially hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic cover some of their housing costs.

The newly-launched Household Assistance Program is for both homeowners and renters.

Cassie Belter is a grants coordinator for the city of Peoria.

"The city council allocated $300,000 to this assistance, and basically it will help to pay rent, mortgage and utility payments for up to three months or up to $5,000 for a household,” she said.

The funds come from extra Community Development Block Grant dollars in the federal CARES Act, meant to assist low-income families through the pandemic.

Belter said the funds should cover at least 50 households.

“The requirements would be that someone lives within the city of Peoria, that they've experienced some kind of financial strain due to COVID-19 and therefore they're unable to pay their bills, and then they have to meet our income limits,” she said.

The city is taking applications today through July 17. A lottery will be held on July 21. Those not among the 50 selected applicants will be placed on a waiting list.
