Coleman, DeHaai, Gozur Lead In Unit 5 School Board Race

Candidates for Unit 5
Candidates for Unit 5 School Board, in alphabetical order from top left: Kentrica Coleman, Gavin Cunningham, Janelle Czapar, Jeremy DeHaai, Stan Gozur, and Ericka Ralston.

Three newcomers were elected to the Unit 5 school board on Tuesday.

Kentrica Coleman, Jeremy DeHaai and Stan Gozur were the top vote-getters as results came in late Tuesday, according to preliminary returns from the county and city election authorities. The trio were among six candidates vying for three open seats. No incumbents sought re-election.

Coleman currently serves on Unit 5's Citizens Advisory Council. She’s also president of the Evans Junior High PTO and works with several booster clubs. She's a technology manager for State Farm.

DeHaai is a sales manager at Kroff Chemical Company. The pandemic is what prompted DeHaai to run, he said, noting his top priority is getting students back into the classroom.

Gozur is a State Farm actuary. He said he wants to use his budgeting and mathematics background to tackle district funding deficits head on.

Coleman and Gozur were endorsed by the Unit Five Education Association, the union that represents Unit 5 teachers.
