Three people were killed Wednesday in a fiery crash that shut down Interstate 39 north of Bloomington-Normal, authorities said.
The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. on I-39 at mile marker 4 near Hudson, Illinois State Police said. Initial reports indicate a northbound semitrailer truck crossed the median and struck another truck head-on. Three people were killed, but their names have not yet been released.
"The investigation into the identities of the decedents is still being conducted along with proper notification to their families," McLean County Coroner Kathy Davis said in a statement Wednesday.
Southbound I-39 remains closed, State Police said. Southbound traffic is being detoured at the El Paso exit (exit 14), according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Northbound lanes are now open.
