WGLT's reporting on the coronavirus pandemic, which began in McLean County in March 2020.

Hospital Capacity Tightens; MCHD Reports 11 New COVID Cases

McLean County’s hospital bed capacity continues to constrict, even as the county’s testing positivity rate and active caseload remain low.

The McLean County Health Department (MCHD) reported 11 new confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases on Thursday, matching the number of new cases reported the day before. It’s the lowest daily total reported since mid-October.

The testing positivity rate (7-day rolling) held steady at 2.5%. The new cases were found in a batch of about 800 test results returned overnight.

The number of people from McLean County hospitalized with COVID remained at 21. However, bed capacity tightened.

Currently, 85% of intensive care beds are in use—up from 73% on Wednesday. Only 7% of all Bloomington-Normal hospital beds are open. That’s the lowest percentage since early December.

The active caseload continues to hover around 200. There are 191 McLean County residents isolating at home, while two more people are now considered recovered.

No new deaths were reported. The death toll remains at 170. The total number of cases confirmed since the start of the pandemic is now 14,444.

About 29,232 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in McLean County, according to MCHD data. The Illinois Department of Public Health reports just over 8,000 residents are fully vaccinated with two doses. That’s about 4.65% of the population.
