The Pinecrest Drive overpass above Interstate 74 in East Peoria is set for replacement next year.
The low-clearance overpass has been blamed for multiple accidents involving larger vehicles over the years.
One fatal accident in 2018 involved a portion of a combine carried by a flatbed sheared off and struck a pickup truck, killing its driver.
A new bridge and interchange reconstruction are scheduled for construction next year as part of the state’s five-year capital improvement plan.
The Illinois Department of Transportation has long labeled the low clearance of the overpass as “intolerable” and a high priority for corrective action.
The current overpass was built in 1984.
