Last week, the University of California system announced they would stop requiring the SAT and ACT for admission. The system will phase this requirement out, and by 2025, their use will be completely eliminated.
The New York Times wrote “the move is expected to accelerate the momentum of American colleges away from the tests, amid charges that they are unfair to poor, black and Hispanic students.”
Critics and researchers say the tests also privilege those who can afford to pay for tutoring. But advocates suggest they can level the admissions playing field for students who have struggled in the classroom.
Will other schools follow the University of California system? Do these tests actually predict how well students will perform in college?
