Decatur's top economic and community development official is coming to McLean County to guide its regional planning efforts.

The McLean County Regional Planning Commission (MCRPC) has named Raymond Lai its new executive director. Lai replaces Vasudha Gadhiraju, who left in July after six years with the agency to become the Town of Normal’s director of innovation and technology.

Lai was most recently director of economic and community development for the City of Decatur. Lai has led a department of 21 staff members for economic and community development programs and activities, which include city planning and mass transit, according to MCRPC.

Lai previously has regional and urban planning and economic development experience in Edwardsville and St. Louis County, Missouri. Lai served as a primary liaison on a regional transportation project along the Interstate 55 corridor growth management plan in Madison County. Lai also spent three years in community planning in Hong Kong, according to Lai's LinkedIn page.

Lai starts Jan. 6, 2020.
