Doug Elgin is the longest-serving commissioner in the history of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Doug Elgin announced Wednesday he plans to resign as commissioner of the Missouri Valley Conference, a position he has held for 33 years.Elgin said he will step down after the 2020-21 academic year.

“I’ve been blessed to have had the opportunity to work in a conference that has valued the academic and competitive success of its student-athletes,” Elgin said. “We’ve had very committed campus leadership and great coaches during my time here. And the continuity and extraordinary dedication of our staff has played a major role in keeping the MVC in a position of prominence.”

Elgin is the longest-serving commissioner in the MVC’s 114-year history. He’s also the longest-tenured commissioner currently employed at any NCAA Division I multi-sport conference, the Valley said in a news release.

Elgin has spent 45 years in college athletics administration and has served on various NCAA committees.

He prepares to leave during an uncertain time in college sports. The pandemic forced the league to postpone fall sports, but the Valley is pushing ahead with plans for a winter season, including men's and women's basketball.

The conference has hired an Atlanta-based firm to lead a national search for Elgin’s replacement.

The 10-team MVC sponsors championships in 10 sports.
