The first home weekend series of 2021 for the Illinois State men’s basketball team won’t happen as scheduled. The Missouri Valley Conference has announced ISU’s two-game series vs. Valparaiso on Jan. 2-3 has been postponed due to COVID-19 cases reported within Valparaiso’s basketball program.
Valparaiso’s first MVC games scheduled for Dec. 28-29 against Bradley were previously postponed due to the reported COVID outbreak.
ISU’s first two league games are still on schedule. The Redbirds will visit Loyola Dec. 27-28.
The league adjusted its schedule this season to limit COVID health risks by having teams play on consecutive days at one location.
“MVC athletically-related activities will take place only to the extent permitted by local environments and applicable national, state, local and institutional guidelines in order to safeguard the health and safety of participants, staff and fans,” the league said in a statement.
The series vs. Valparaiso represents the first scheduled games the ISU men's team has had to postpone. The Redbirds have not reported any COVID cases this season, though they dealt with at least one positive case and potential exposures during the preseason after students returned to campus.
